Gainfully employed

I got a phone call this afternoon from someone at the HR department of HortResearch – it seems they are sending me a contract to sign!

This summer I’m going to be working (largely doing monkey work the “real” scientists wouldn’t want to do) at the Palmerston North campus of HortResearch helping to develop a simple DNA based test to determine the presence of pest resistant genes in seedling apple plants. This will hopefully allow marker assisted selection and “fast breeding” of apple lines. Can’t wait!

In other news I’ve become utterly obsessed with bumble bees. In fact they have become my favourite hymenopteran - which is high praise indeed. Expect a post about my new obsession soon.
